Pebble House, Los Angeles, 2021

SOIL’s “Pebble House” builds on Los Angeles’ storied history of experimental homes and case-study houses. Channeling the spirit of optimism and openness, we raise the house on a deck and maximize exposure. Clad in corrugated metal, Pebble House is a self-contained residence. The house’s flower-shaped plan allows for an innovative and efficient core for all the mechanical and wet spaces while offering freedom all around.

Dwellers can reconfigure the home for many ways of living. The prefabricated façade maximizes exposure to the exterior, opening up where needed and allowing natural cross-ventilation independent from orientation.

Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, a new typology of housing being promoted by the Los Angeles planning department to offer architect-designed flats for in-laws, guests, or a little extra income. “This program is about making ADUs more accessible, more affordable, and more beautiful,” said Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti. “Making them part of the blueprint of our efforts to tackle our housing crunch and create more affordable communities citywide.”

Our standard plan has been approved by the city of Los Angeles.
