Kurimanzutto, New York, USA, 2023

Kurimanzutto Gallery, a leading contemporary art gallery in Mexico City, expands to New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, reaffirming its commitment to the city and its ongoing efforts to showcase Mexican and international projects in a unique and dynamic environment. The 6,500 sq ft ground floor space was designed in close collaboration with the gallery, its artists, and collaborators, building upon Kurimanzutto’s history as a platform for the community of artists, while inspiring a deep desire to leave a lasting impression on the city.

Upon entering the gallery, visitors are welcomed into a reception area, which also serves as a bookstore, resting area, and programming space. The main exhibition area is both flexible and generous in proportions, maintaining an intimate viewing experience while allowing for the display of large-format works and social events to take place. Complementing the abstraction of the art walls, Kurimanzutto NY features a rich array of textures; the wood doors provide privacy for the back-of-house offices, while also exuding warmth; textile panels are used as a backdrop for gatherings; a combination of new and old bricks are stitched to honor the history of the place in the work areas. Additionally, the material palette serves as a visual reminder, connecting the New York City space to its Mexico City home base.
