Shanghai Museum, Century Park, Pudong, Shanghai
As part of a larger masterplan to develop the city’s Pudong site, the government is undertaking several cultural projects in and around Century Park. The main component is the 100,000 sqm Shanghai Museum, one of the most prominent museums in China. It is the treasure trove of Chinese history with a collection that spans thousands of years and over tens of thousands of objects.
Our design expresses the union of Culture, Nature, and Architecture. The three main functional areas (storage, display, and management) are organized around three different atriums: “the hanging rock,” “the cascade,” and “the garden.” Visiting the museum becomes a journey through time and space—ancient and modern stories mix, with the seasons’ variations, with the museum’s evolution. Visitors experience the space step by step, scenery by scenery, in a three-dimensional landscape.
