Frame Series, New York, NY

The Frame Series is a family of sorts. Not a nuclear family, with its implied hierarchy, but a more generous and open one. Maybe it is better to speak of kinship. It assembles people and holds them momentarily together within a steel mesh, stretched over a constellation of bent tubes. Channeling a Bauhausian interest in the steel pipe as the basis of furniture, the Frame series eclipses functionalist design. It demands the question: “how to use?” and asks this collectively. As one sits down the mesh tightens, making you aware someone has joined.

To date, six Frames have seen the light, while we continue to explore what’s next for the family. The notion of open furniture, furniture that defies obvious use builds on an interest in our studio to design space and objects that stimulate imagination and participation. The Frames can be used both inside and outside.
