Kukje Jeju, Jeju, South Korea
Kukje Gallery - Jeju is a pioneering world-class gallery and multi-purpose arts center; a destination for experiencing art, architecture and the remarkable Jeju landscape through new and innovative exhibitions.
Our design utilizes the adventuresome appeal of its location to draw a parallel with the exploratory experience of art.
Sited within a 13-acre landscaped area on the beautiful southern slope of the volcanic Halla San National Park, four buildings facing the Atlantic Ocean act as base camp. They are loosely arranged, as if in ruins, amongst orange orchards and local vegetation. Embedded within the site, elemental forms anchored in pre-fab and cast in place concrete encourage the mode of archaeological discovery.
The complex houses two gallery spaces, a restaurant, a café, and outside performance space and a visitor center. Apart from shows, the site offers a wide variety of special events including talks, seminars, workshops, and screenings, and is an attractive destination for young people and families.
